About Perchtoldsdorf

Perchtoldsdorf is a market town in the Mödling district of Niederösterreich, and one of the numerous wine towns in the vicinity of Vienna. Only a stone's throw from the city of Vienna, and filled with history and opportunities to relax, it is a wonderful place to visit and we are very lucky to call it home.

Things to do

Hiking and nature walks

Föhrenberge Nature Park

Perchtoldsdorf Heide

The Föhrenberge Nature Park was founded in 1969. It comprises 6,600 hectares of valuable natural and cultural landscape on the hilly eastern edge of the Vienna Woods and stretches from Gumpoldskirchen in the south to Perchtoldsdorf in the north. The special feature that gives the nature park its name are the umbrella-shaped black pines ("paraplui trees"). The diverse forests are also home to many other forest habitats such as beech forests and downy oak forests. The dry grassland areas are also typical of the nature park - former pastures such as Gießhübler Heide, Perchtoldsdorfer Heide, Eichkogel and Sittendorfer Heide. The Seewiesen meadows in Kaltenleutgeben are particularly colorful Vienna Woods meadows. The extensive wine-growing landscape in the eastern part of the nature park is not only ideal for hiking, but also produces excellent wines.

The right of winegrowers to serve their own wine in their own premises in Perchtoldsdorf without a license, dates back to a circular issued by Emperor Joseph II in 1784. The Heurige was originally intended to present the wine of the current harvest to the townsfolk and the migrant workers who arrived to help with the harvest.

Heuriger can only operate if they have been open and producing wine since the original declaration (although many are much older, dating back from as far as the 1500s), which makes them a wonderful slice of history, as well as expert winemakers.

In the beginning, only bread and nuts were offered alongside the wine, however nowadays there is a buffet counter serving traditional regional food, as well as Austrian classics. The food business is generally separate to the winery, so while you order and pay for your meal at the buffet, the wine will be brought to you by a friendly waiter, who will bill for the drinks separately. Tipping for good service is always appreciated, with around 7-10% being the norm.

Heuriger only open for 12 weeks per year, and in order to ensure there is always somewhere open, this is staggered. We have listed some of our favourites that will be open the week of the wedding, if you would like to indulge!

With so many Heuriger around serving hearty and great value food, there is not much demand for restaurants in Perchtoldsdorf, however there are some, and for breakfasts and coffees (try the Viennese classic Melange!), there are amazing cafés! We have listed a few we love. Alternatively, there are some nice places in the neighbouring city of Mödling, and the city of Vienna is chock full of culinary gems, and both are very easy to reach via taxi or public transport (see Getting Around).
